Goodwood Farm

Breeds
Home Farm has now changed to native rare breeds for all its breeding livestock and numbers continue to rise. We will complete this task by keeping back all the female stock to replace modern breeds. We have crossed the Sussex Beef bull with the Dairy Shorthorn cattle to give a good shaped animal to add flavour to the meat and to carry the tenderness of the Shorthorn.

Feeding
All food for the cattle is grown on the Estate; indeed, Goodwood is the only entirely self-sustaining organic farm in the country.
The animals are fed on a mixture of red clover, white clover, oat whole crop and barley whole crop, conserved as silages. The animals are also fed wheat, oats, barley, beans, peas and lupins. All are rolled and fed by portion, plus the silages, to make up the animals’ rations according to their particular needs – they have different protein requirements according to their particular stage of development.

Cattle

Lifestyle
In the summer, the beef cattle are grazed outside on the Downs. In the winter, they are housed in deep litter barns, on straw. A new beef finishing system – a deep litter barn- has been designed and built specifically to meet the needs of the cattle. Home to 120 beef cattle, the building is open sided with a double vortex roof which enables air to rotate every second, thus preventing the spread of airborne disease. The animals are checked every day by farm staff. The cattle are treated using homeopathic remedies, with veterinary surgeons brought in regularly to assess them with the emphasis firmly on prevention rather than cure.

Traceability
All Goodwood livestock can be traced on every step of their journey from field to plate. Home Farm is accountable to the Soil Association and Trading Standards, but additionally has its own traceability audit system in place which sees the Farm Director, Manager, Food and Beverage Manager and Health and Safety Manager following an animal from farm to slaughterhouse to meat processing, to ensure that they can be completely confident that they have full traceability on every cut of meat from the farm to the customer.

Products
Home Farm supplies a full range of organic beef products for private entertaining and corporate events at Goodwood House, featuring rump and sirloin steaks, in particular.
