A staggering £22m worth of bids were placed at the Festival of Speed 2012 Bonhams’ auction on Friday 29 June. The automotive collection of watchmaker George Daniels consisted of seven cars and two motorcycles, headlined by the ex-Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin 1929-32 Bentley 4½-Litre Supercharged Single-Seater – the car that set the Brooklands Outer Circuit Lap Record at more than 137mph in 1931.
The world record for not only a Bentley, but also a British car being sold at auction, was reached at over an astounding £5m! In addition, the world record was also set for a Rolls Royce to be sold at auction with an impressive highest bid at over £4m.
