The sole airworthy Avro Vulcan ‘XH558’ bomber took to the skies over Goodwood this afternoon. Piloted by Captain Withers, who flew these Delta Wing aircraft for 20 years in period, it soared in from the south with its four Olympus engines trumpeting its arrival long before it came into view. This fabulous machine was conceived as far back as 1946 and would become a stalwart of Great Britain’s Cold War defence through the 1950s and ’60s before playing a pivotal role in the Falkland Island conflict.
