THE WOODS
With over 2,000 acres of woodland, Goodwood provides both hardwood and softwood timber for use in the furniture and building industry.
One of the traditional woodland management methods still used at Goodwood is coppicing - where young tree stems are repeatedly cut down to near ground level, producing many new shoots. A number of years later these can be harvested – contributing an important part of the commercial crop.
Beech thinning provides approximately 1,000 tons of wood to local firewood merchants each year and in line with our sustainable woodland policy, helps ensure Beech forests for the future.
Timber derived from softwood thinning is used for fencing, garden and landscape designs - with Chestnut and Hazel coppice used for local fence products and sheep hurdles.
Although this market has declined, some traditional coppicing continues. Chestnut, with its natural durability, is still used for garden furniture such as benches and for fence posts and Hazel for garden products and structures.
