Goodwood's Guide to betting

Picking a Winner!

Studying time

Studying the form, having a “flutter” and cheering on your selections are considered an essential part of the unique Horseracing experience.

Horseracing formulas or luck?

Picking a horse you fancy can be as scientific as you like - some punters study the form, pick the favourite or use a complicated formula to choose their horse. Others may opt for a rank outsider purely because they like its name!

Generally, bookmakers, on-course betting shops and tote positions will offer different prices.

Ask the Bookmaker for your bet and listen as they repeat this back to you - making sure it is correct. You will receive a betting ticket, which you need to keep safe for the duration of the race in order to claim any winnings - fingers crossed!

Popular bets

WIN ONLY

You can only win if your horse is first past the post.

EACH WAY

You can win if your horse wins or gets placed. This will double your bet, e.g. £2 each way = £2 to win and £2 for a place = £4 total stake.

Getting technical

More complicated bets such as accumulators are available. Ask a bookmaker or experienced racegoer in your party for more details.

Cashing in on horseracing!

If your horse wins the race or is placed, present your betting ticket to the Bookmaker to receive your winnings.

Make sure you do not destroy your ticket until after the ‘Weighed in’ announcement.
