Fifth Race Winner’s Quotes

European Breeders’ Fund New Ham Fillies’ Maiden

200 UP FOR FORTIFIED HANNON

Trainer Richard Hannon saddled his 200th winner at Goodwood this afternoon, then modestly dismissed the achievement by saying: "It took 40 years!"

Hannon’s landmark success came via Kalahaag, who carried the colours of Benny Andersson in the EBF New Ham Fillies’ Maiden. Andersson is an emerging owner in British racing, but best known as part of the fab-four that comprised Swedish super group Abba.

The victory extended Hannon’s lead in Glorious Goodwood’s leading trainers’ table, and added to Richard Hughes’ position as pacesetter in the Racing UK leading jockey’s award - both men have been associated with five winners this week.

Hannon continued: "Goodwood is a place I love to come to and we’ve had a bit of luck here. It’s very convenient, because you saddle the horses in one place, lead them into the paddock then walk through to watch the race. Everything is right in front of you and owners love it.

"I love Salisbury and Newbury and all the other courses that have been good to us and Goodwood is right up there."

Commenting on Kalahaag, who was making her second start at the races, he said: "She didn’t jump too good [on her debut at Newbury] and got in a bit of trouble in running, but she was finishing. She’s in the Millions races [sponsored by Tattersalls and held between late August and early October at Newmarket]."

Of Andersson, Hannon said: "I trained a Danehill Dancer for Benny a couple of years ago and this is the second horse I’ve had of his. I told him to come today, but he couldn’t make it, but he often pops down to the yard in his flying horsebox and is a very nice guy and very knowledgeable."

Ed Dunlop, trainer of runner-up Dubawi Gulf, said: "I was very happy with that run and now we will try and win a maiden with her."

SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES

VINTAGE AT GOODWOOD HANDICAP

CITRUS STARS FOR WALL

Jockey George Baker, having his second winner at Glorious Goodwood 2010 after taking the last yesterday, came with a perfectly-timed run to get Citrus Star up in the dying stages of the Vintage At Goodwood Handicap, to the delight of trainer Chris Wall.

"He was denied a run when he wanted one but that may have helped him as George had to wait and he is the master of getting through gaps.

"He got up and didn’t win too far so it worked perfectly. But it was a bit of a heart in the mouth moment when he was boxed in," said Wall.

"It was only his third start of the season and he didn’t go in the stalls at Ascot last time so I just wanted to see him run a proper race.

"He’s always been a horse with talent, it’s just a matter of putting everything together and nurturing that talent in the right direction.

"We’ll see what the handicapper does now and whether we have to step up to Listed class."

PUB TEAM SCORE THANKS TO DANDY AND HAMOODY

Yorkshire trainer Dandy Nicholls has few peers when it comes to handicap sprinters, and he proved the point once again when taking the closing race on day three of Glorious Goodwood.

The Nicholls-trained Hamoody, who won the Group Two Richmond Stakes at this meeting four years ago, joined his current stable earlier this year and now runs for a syndicate based at the Hart Inn, Sandsend near Whitby. He was ridden today by Michael Geran, who was enjoying his first ever winner at the meeting.

Spokesman Mike Scaife said: "There are six of us in the syndicate. Dandy bought the horse and said he would give us some fun. Because he’s won at Goodwood in the past, it made sense to come back here."

Hamoody was backed from 20/1 into 14/1, but Scaife said: "We all had a little bit each-way on him, but not more than that because it’s been two steps forward and three back with him. He’s shown promise, then not built on it, but it all came right today."

Hamoody is entered in tomorrow’s Rolf Group Stewards Sprint Handicap (2.45) at Glorious Goodwood, and Nicholls said the horse would take his chance if happy in the morning. Nicholls said: "We don’t gallop them at home, we run them, and if he’s okay tomorrow he might as well take his chance.

"We’re just getting to know him - he was a good horse, but lost his way. He has a good rapport with this place."

Kevin Ryan, trainer of runner-up Bajan Tryst, said: "He’s stringing some good runs together now, and I think he’s really starting to progress. I’m going to look after him this year because he’s still maturing and I think next season he could be a nice horse."

TAPS ON OVERNIGHT AS DRY SPELL CONTINUES

Glorious weather over the Sussex Downs is perfect for racegoers, but means the racecourse’s turf needs a little helping hand from man to keep it in tip-top condition.

With that in mind clerk of the course Seamus Buckley and his team will be watering the straight six furlongs tonight in bid to keep the surface from becoming too fast.

Buckley said: "It’s been dry for 36 hours and is forecast to be dry again tomorrow, so we are watering the entire straight with six to eight millimetres of water.

"The rails on the bottom bend are being moved to the inside to create fresh ground.

"It’s been another fine day’s racing, the crowd seems happy, the competitors are happy and the weather has been perfect for watching horses in this wonderful setting."

AGE OF AQUARIUS IN GOOD HANDS

Age Of Aquarius, who pulled up lame while leading the field during this afternoon’s running of the Artemis Goodwood Cup, was taken to Arundel Veterinary Hospital following the race.

Giving an update on the four-year-old colt, clerk of the course Seamus Buckley, said: "I’ve spoken to Aidan O’Brien [the horse’s trainer] who is satisfied with all the procedures that have been carried out. The horse has gone to Arundel Veterinary Hospital and is being dealt with accordingly. He has been X-rayed, but we have yet to hear about the findings."

QUEALLY BANNED

Jockey Tom Queally was suspended for a day after being found guilty of careless riding aboard Flame Of Gibraltar in the Moet Hennessy Fillies’ Stakes.

The suspension takes place on August 12.
