FLYER WINGS IN TO OPEN PERRETT’S ACCOUNT
A Sussex-trained winner - the third of the week - opened proceedings on day five of Glorious Goodwood.
Roxy Flyer’s success in the opening handicap put Pulborough trainer Amanda Perrett on the meeting’s scoresheet - adding to victories for locally-based William Knight and Peter Winkworth - and did likewise for jockey Jimmy Quinn.
Perrett’s husband, Mark, said: "We were hoping she would run a big race because she’s improved with every race this year. You need a bit of luck in running at Goodwood, but we got it today.
"She learning with each run and getting more street wise. She’s a big filly and can only get better as the year goes on, and considering she was taking on so many colts she proved she was tough.
"We tend to buy this type of horse because they are affordable - the precocious ones tend to be too expensive, while the late-maturing ones are cheaper. Some people want instant action, but we’re lucky to have a good group of local owners who seem prepared to wait.
"It doesn’t get any better than to have a winner at Glorious Goodwood when you are a local trainer, and almost everyone who owns a horse at the yard is here today. I was getting slightly worried we wouldn’t have a winner at the meeting, but came here hopeful of two chances today, this one and one in the last [Truism]."
Quinn commented: "The pace was solid. I wasn’t smart on my feet - I wanted Paul Hanagan’s line, who was in front of me - but I was happy because they went strong.
"Early in the straight, the other horses were kicking down the outside and I was sort of stuck in a little bit of a hole but I saved a lot of ground. It got a bit tight for room in the last furlong but she is brave and she kicked through it. She went and won quite nicely in the end.
"It can get tight round here and I got through because it opened up at the right time - they were closing just before I got there but you can’t afford to get stopped round here. I have ridden this filly three times and she is improving with every race.
"I thought that it was really good racing ground on Tuesday and then it rode a bit quick on Thursday but today, it is really good racing ground again with just a few spots on the easy side."

CECIL FILLY SHIMMERED FOR A MOMENT
Shimmering Moment had to settle for second place in the Play Britain’s Got Talent Bingo At Meccabingo.com Handicap after succumbing to the late flourish of Roxy Flyer in the mile and three furlong contest.
Tom Queally seized the advantage as he drove his mount for home inside the final quarter mile but the 12/1 shot was unable repel the victorious assault, going down by a length at the finish.
Trainer Henry Cecil commented: "She ran very well there, giving 3lb to the winner. She should probably get a little bit further."
The Andrew Balding-trained Dromore (12/1) had shown an aptitude for Kempton’s Polytrack while failing to run up to his best on grass, prompting a suspicion that turf was not his surface, but the Traditionally gelding posted an improved effort in taking third, a further length and three quarters behind the runner-up.
Anna-Lisa Balding, representing her trainer husband, said: "We are thrilled with that because all of his early season form was on the all-weather. To be honest, he didn’t really handle the track today. He came down the hill lovely but just didn’t know what to do when he hit the rising ground.
"The owners love Goodwood so we are all delighted that they have managed to have a placed horse here. It’s lovely for them."
GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE
Jimmy Quinn, partner of the 16/1 winner Roxy Flyer, said: "Real good ground."

David Probert, on third placed Dromore, said: "It is on the slow side of good."
John Fahy, rider of the fourth home Averroes, said: " It is just on the slow side of good."
Kieren Fallon, partner of Rock N Roll Ransom, said: "It is not a lot different to yesterday."
Frankie Dettori, rider of Wadnaan, said: "Good to firm."
Richard Hughes, jockey of Valiant Knight, said: "Good."
Eddie Ahern, jockey of Ebony Boom, said: "It is a bit slower than yesterday. I would say it is perfect ground now."
Alan Munro, jockey of Meglio Ancora, said: "It is a touch on the slow side of good."
