Glorious Goodwood – the pinnacle of Britain’s sporting and social calendar returns to the Downs once again this summer as fabulous fashions and thrilling horseracing takes over the racecourse from 31st July – 4th August.
The five day festival kicks off on Tuesday 31st July with the Opening Ceremony and Blessing of the Cups. Panamas and linen flood the racecourse to celebrate the first day of the festival and the Group 2 bet365 Lennox Stakes keeps the thrills coming – named after the Duke of Lennox, the race was established in 2000 and is just one of the many highlights to come over the five days.
QIPCO Sussex Stakes
One of the British Champion Series highlights is the QIPCO Sussex Stakes on Wednesday 1st August. First established in 1841, the one-mile race, once considered as the most prestigious at Goodwood, keeps the race-goers on their toes, with superstar racehorse of the moment, Frankel taking the honours last year and who is expected to come back to Goodwood to try and recapture his crown. In true glamorous fashion, Lord and Lady March then host their Race Week Regency Ball Gala at Goodwood House. Set amongst the rolling countryside, guests can enjoy a champagne reception, delicious canapés and an assortment of surprises as well as an electrifying performance by singing sensation and bona fide pop star Paloma Faith.
If you are a lover of fashion, Ladies Day on Thursday 2nd August is for you as a sea of elegant dresses flood the racecourse and it’s all about the ladies! The Magnolia Cup (supported by Audi) – the celebrity charity race will see the likes of Edie Campbell and Sara Cox take the reins in aid of two charities Spinal Research & Winston’s Wish. The ladies will be decked out in designer jockey silks created by fashion icons including Kate Moss, Sadie Frost & Pearl Lowe, so slip on your favourite pair of heels and soak up the atmosphere with family, friends and a glass of champagne! It is also a day to celebrate the 200th running of the Artemis Goodwood Cup, which has seen many superstars win the two mile contest, including the likes of Yeats, Double Trigger and Persian Punch.
the Richmond Stakes
Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th round off the week, with Friday’s highlight race being the Richmond Stakes, won in such impressive style last year by Harbour Watch. Ever competitive, excitement captures the crowd as the thoroughbreds take to the track in this fast-paced race. The Grand Finale ensures Glorious goes down with a bang on Saturday as the British Champion Series’ Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes welcomes the best mares and fillies to battle it out against each other for the 2012 title. Also on the cards is one of the most competitive betting races of the week, the Stewards’ Cup. Glorious Goodwood, full of thrills, spills and show-stopping glamour is set once again to deliver an unbeatable five days and continues its unrivalled reputation as an event not to be missed!
