With the downs still ringing with applause for the mighty Frankel in yesterday’s Sussex Stakes, today we turn our attention to the Goodwood Cup.
Of course, it’s Ladies’ Day, and fascinators abound today both on and off the track.
2.00: Betfred The Bonus King Handicap
Sagramor is ultra consistent, being in the money in his last six starts, and 7-1 seems too big for him. He’s already tackled Goodwood before (on his debut), and while he didn’t seem to take to the course, he has turned out to be a very good handicapper and should know better now. Oceanway was just denied a hat-trick at Ascot last time but could resume winning ways, while Las Varglas Star could have a trick up his sleeve.
2.35: Audi King George Stakes
Masamah ran a blinder at York in a listed race to get to winning ways and should be ready for the step up in class. He is a little hit and miss, but is well worth a chance. Beyond Desire won his debut at this track and, with that course form, could trouble the judge. Swiss Diva had a great season last year and wasn’t outclassed in a very hot renewal of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. That form puts him right in the firing line.
3.10 Artemis Goodwood Cup (Group 2)
Fox Hunt hasn’t raced in Group company before, but in a wide open race, looks to have as good a chance as the rest. Another consistent type Mark Johnston (who’s having a good week so far), the trip will suit and he should be close. Overturn didn’t go to Galway to take his chance in this, so it’s going to be interesting how he fares in top class company. The ground will suit as well.
3.45 i-Shares Fillies Stakes (Group 3)
Shankardeh has come over from France for this, and can make the trip worthwhile by taking this Group 3. The French colt ran a cracker last time at Saint Cloud running a close third in a Group 2, and on that evidence, is in great form. Field of Miracles nearly took the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot but just missed out. Sir Henry Cecil, still hot from Frankel, sends out Wild Coco as well, who should improve further.
4.20: EBF Medician New Ham Fillies’ Stakes
Gifted Girl ran a nice debut, and now she knows her job, should find the improvement needed to win. She has an entry in the Fillies’ Mile and has the best experience in the field. Santarini hails from a stable renowned for their juvenile winners, so may be ready first time out, as may Star of Bombay. Both are Richard Hannon’s, who is enjoying a brilliant week so far, and should give good accounts.
4.55: Tatler Handicap
Godolphin finally got off the mark yesterday with a maiden winner, and they can snatch this race as well with Bridgefield. There’s been steady improvement each run with this individual, and he should have enough in the tank to make the first three. Tuscania is unexposed and has run well in defeat before, and Sinfonico could run well at a big price.
5.25: Turf Club Stakes Handicap
A tough race to finish with, where all the runners have little bits and pieces of form. It’s difficult to choose between Dragonera, Reflect, and Parvana. Reflect gets the vote because of the great form Hannon/Hughes are in this week, and that the horse is on the upgrade.
