Goodwood's Foundation Stakes looks a Hot Prospect

Michael Jarvis is expecting a “big run” from Hot Prospect in what promises to be a fascinating renewal of the Listed Mouton Cadet Classic Foundation Stakes (3.45pm) at Goodwood on Wednesday, September 22.

Five classy contenders are engaged in the £35,000 event staged over just short of 10 furlongs and Jarvis is hoping his charge can build on a good second behind Distant Memories in the Group Three Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor on August 28.

Hot Prospect, who landed a soft-ground Haydock handicap earlier that month, finished ninth behind Workforce in the Group One Investec Derby over 12 furlongs at Epsom in June.

Jarvis revealed today: “Hot Prospect has been progressive all year. He has shown a preference for cut in the ground, so I’m just hoping it doesn’t dry up too much at Goodwood on Wednesday.

“It was a good run at Windsor last time. He hit a bit of a flat patch about three furlongs out and as a result the horse gave himself a little bit to do - he just didn’t quite get there.

“He has taken on a couple of decent older horses and he has form with Bullet Train, so I’m looking for a big run. Holberg ran second to Laaheb of ours in the September Stakes and we know that Laaheb is a pretty good horse, so I give Holberg every respect.”

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Holberg easily landed the Listed WHEB Group Stakes over a mile and a half at Goodwood in June and last season’s Group Three Queen’s Vase winner is one of Godolphin’s entries for the Group One Emirates Melbourne Cup in Australia on November 2.

Bullet Train held Hot Prospect in third when winning the Group Three Derby Trial at Lingfield in May but was subsequently last of 12 in the Derby itself. Henry Cecil’s colt drops down in trip having finished fifth to Whispering Gallery in a 12-furlong Listed contest at Windsor on August 28.

The other runners are the Mick Channon-trained Heliodor and Pink Symphony from the Paul Cole stable.

Goodwood hosts a fantastic seven-race card on Wednesday, kicking off with the Electrolux Professional E.B.F. Maiden Stakes (2pm) over seven furlongs, the nine-furlong R H Hall E.B.F. Maiden Stakes (2.35pm), and the 3663 First For Food Service Handicap (3.10pm) over six furlongs, all preceding the feature Listed event.

The card continues with the Piper Champagne Handicap (4.20pm) over a mile and three furlongs, the Discovery Foods Handicap (4.55pm) over a mile and half and the concluding Merbury 20th Anniversary Apprentice Handicap (5.30pm) over five furlongs.

LATEST GOING AT GOODWOOD

The going at Goodwood is currentlyGOOD.

Clerk of the Course, Seamus Buckley, said today: “The going is good at the moment after a few showers earlier this morning. The forecast is for it to remain dry from now right on through to Thursday, so I expect the ground to be a touch on the faster side of good for the start of racing on Wednesday.

“The course is in good order and is retaining the moisture quite well, so we are looking forward to competitive racing on nice ground.”

 ILLUSTRIOUS BLUE WARMS UP FOR MELBOURNE

Illustrious Blue, who has won seven times at Goodwood including this season’s Group Two Artemis Goodwood Cup, will exercise on the course before racing.

Trained locally at Angmering Park by William Knight, the seven-year-old is being prepared for a tilt at Australia’s most famous race, the Group One Melbourne Cup at Flemington, on Tuesday, November 2.

The workout is scheduled to take place an hour before the first race (1.00pm) and racegoers are welcome to come and view what will be the seven-year-old’s last appearance on a British racecourse as he will continue his career in Australia after the Melbourne Cup.

In recognition of Illustrious Blue’s outstanding record at Goodwood, the course will be staging a race in the horse’s honour during the 2011 season.

Adam Waterworth, who will take over as Goodwood’s Managing Director in 2011, commented: “We are delighted that Illustrious Blue will be making one final appearance at Goodwood prior to his export to Australia. We will all be cheering him on in the Melbourne Cup and wish him well for the future.

“The horse’s record at Goodwood speaks for itself and he was a great favourite with the crowds. We are very happy to name a race in his honour next year.”

 CATERING AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED BEFORE RACING

Wednesday, September 22, is the 20th annual Merbury Caterers’ Day at Goodwood and plays host to an exciting new concept with a racecourse catering awards ceremony taking place before racing.

Organised by Ivor Spreadbury of Merbury Catering Consultants and sponsored by Piper-Heidsieck champagne, the awards will be presented by Lesley Graham of Channel 4 Racing and recognise excellence across the racecourse catering industry.

A total of 11 awards are up for grabs, with categories recognising the best racecourse, the best suppliers, the best bar, the best fine dining experience, innovations in the racecourse catering industry and the best racecourse catering equipment. There will also be a lifetime achievement award for a racecourse catering personality.

An audience of around 300 people will be in attendance with representatives from a large number of Britain’s racecourses and from across the catering industry.

Ivor Spreadbury of Merbury Catering Consultants commented: “Catering plays an integral part of the raceday experience and we are thrilled to be staging the first catering awards to coincide with the 20th annual Merbury Caterers’ Day.

“The awards will recognise the very best in racecourse catering and we hope that by highlighting the elite, this will we have trickle-down effect throughout the industry.”
