Ground Drying Out at Goodwood

Goodwood is set to stage two wonderful days of racing this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29, with the course recovering well after the recent very wet weather.

A deluge of rain, amounting to 49 millimetres in 24 hours, caused the abandonment of Goodwood’s final evening fixture of the year last night, August 26, but Clerk of the Course Seamus Buckley reported today that the conditions have improved significantly.

Buckley said at 2.00pm today: “I am out walking the course now and it has recovered well. The ground is currently soft, with a GoingStick reading of 7.1, and I would predict conditions to be much the same for the racing on Saturday and Sunday.

“The drizzle stopped at around 10.00am this morning and the forecast is for it to now stay dry right the way through to Monday.

“We are fortunate that the course has been able to recover so quickly when you consider the amount of rain we have experienced in the last 10 days. It was disappointing to have to abandon our final evening fixture of the season on Thursday, but the course was just not able to cope with the amount of rain we had in the preceding 24 hours.”

The highlight of Saturday’s seven-race card is the £100,000 Group Two totesport.com Celebration Mile (3.05pm) while Sunday is Family Fun Day with the £57,000 Group Three Supreme Stakes (3.55pm) the racing highlight.
