Six line up for the Betfair Celebration mile

Six horses will run in the 2012 Betfair Celebration Mile at Goodwood this Saturday, including CHACHAMAIDEE, winner of the bet365 Lennox Stakes at the Glorious meeting earlier this month for Sir Henry Cecil. The filly will be partnered by her regular jockey Tom Queally.

Roger Charlton will be hoping that his progressive filly, THISTLE BIRD, will maintain a winning streak in the mile contest having won on her last two starts, both at listed level. The Beckhampton-based trainer comments: “It’s a double step up for her, in terms of class, the other option was a Group3 next weekend but we are running at Goodwood to see if we can finish in the top three to get some black type. She’s run well at the course before, is in good form and the ground will be fine, but I suppose we have to find two to three lengths on her previous performances.”

TRUMPET MAJOR, winner of the RSA Thoroughbred Stakes on the Friday at Glorious Goodwood and ALJAMAAHER, an unlucky third in the same race, will both be making the return jockey to West Sussex for Richard Hannon and Roger Varian respectively. Also entered is PREMIO LOCO for Newmarket handler Chris Wall, who was fifth in the race last year and Mark Johnston’s VAN ELLIS completes the field.

Seamus Buckley, Clerk of the Course at Goodwood Racecourse, says: “There are six left in and looks a warm race. The going at the moment is Good, Good to Firm in Places. If the weather forecast is correct I am predicting the ground to be good all over, it in great order and we are looking forward to a great week end of racing.”

The big handicap of the day is the Betfair Summer Double Second Leg Stakes where a maximum field of 20 will line up. Jamie Osborne’s FIELD OF DREAM is hoping to make it a profitable day for his connections as he is line for a £100,000 bonus from the sponsors Betfair, having won a handicap over the same distance on Betfair King George Day. He will carry top weight of 9st 10lb.
