Sporting Great Dallaglio joins forces with Goodwood in aid of Tickets for Troops

Goodwood Racecourse is delighted to announce that this year’s ambassador for Sporting Greats Day will be rugby legend Lawrence Dallaglio. In addition, in the week leading up to Armed Forces Day on 26th June, together with the Dallaglio Foundation, Goodwood is proud to confirm it will be supporting Tickets for Troops and that 200 tickets will be donated to the charity to enable serving members of the armed forces to attend Sporting Greats Day at Glorious Goodwood for free.

Sporting Greats Day takes place on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood, Tuesday 27th July, and is a celebration of sporting excellence at one Britain’s most renowned summer sporting occasions. The day also promotes a charitable cause and this year the beneficiary is Tickets for Troops. As well as welcoming 200 soldiers, sailors and airmen on the day, via the Dallaglio Foundation, Tickets for Troops will benefit from the proceeds of a raceday lunch hosted by Lawrence Dallaglio. The charity is dedicated to offering free tickets for major cultural and sporting events to serving men and women.

Lord March, Chairman of Goodwood, said: “We are delighted that Lawrence will be the ambassador for Sporting Greats Day. Not only did Lawrence reach the apex of his profession as a rugby player, but since retiring he has done fantastic work promoting a range of causes through his own Dallaglio Foundation. Add to that the fact that he is passionate about horseracing and is a racehorse owner himself and it was clear that he was perfectly placed to promote Sporting Greats Day at Glorious Goodwood.”

“Goodwood will be supporting Tickets for Troops throughout the year but Sporting Greats Day is a great opportunity to showcase the charity’s work. Both Goodwood and the Dallaglio Foundation individually identified Tickets for Troops as being a great cause to champion and we will be showing our support for the armed forces by welcoming 200 soldiers, sailors and airmen to Glorious Goodwood.”

During his fifteen year career in professional rugby, Lawrence Dallaglio captained England, won the World Cup and led his club, London Wasps, to unprecedented success. Aside from his multiple sporting achievements Dallaglio is also keen follower of racing. He has experienced the thrill of racehorse ownership at first hand through his involvement with Highclere Thoroughbred Racing and currently has shares in two horses in training, including an unbeaten three year old called Decorative.

Lawrence Dallaglio said: “I’m really looking forward to Sporting Greats Day. I’ve always loved my racing and there’s no better location for watching top class racing than Goodwood. Consequently, the prospect of hosting a lunch with a number of my fellow sportsmen and women in aid of a great cause on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood was too good an opportunity to miss.

“Through the Dallaglio Foundation we aim to support very specific, tangible projects which make a real and personal difference to people’s lives. Tickets for Troops is one such cause and Sporting Greats Day provides a great platform to generate awareness and raise some funds for the charity.

Lawrence added: “The icing on the cake would be to have a runner at Glorious Goodwood and I’m hoping that Decorative might be able to run during the course of the meeting. She’s unbeaten so far in two starts and it’s very exciting to be involved with a filly of her potential.”

Chairman of Tickets for Troops, Lord Marland said: “Tickets for Troops is delighted to be supported by the Dallaglio Foundation on this special day at Goodwood.  The charity is beginning to make a real difference to the lives of so many of our marvellous serving members of the Armed Forces and their families.  I know all our troops will have a fantastic day at Goodwood and it is a huge boost to their morale to receive this donation of tickets to Sporting Greats Day.
