THE QUEEN, HANNON & HUGHES - FRIDAY, JULY 30

Fifth race win quotes -

RSA Nursery

HANNON AND HUGHES IN MAJESTIC FORM

The Queen enjoyed her first Glorious Goodwood winner for two years when Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes teamed up yet again for victory, this time with the aptly-named Royal Exchange in the RSA Nursery.

It was the seventh victory at this year’s Glorious Goodwood for the Hannon/Hughes combination and completed an 8/1 double on the day for the pair, following Libranno’s earlier victory.

Hughes was registering his 100th career win at the course.

The Royal Applause juvenile, sent off the 3/1 joint favourite, relished every yard of the seven-furlong trip, picking up inside the distance to wear down runner-up Diamond Geezah and win by half a length.

The Queen’s previous Glorious Goodwood success came with Firestreak in the 2008 running of the E.B.F. Kennels Classified Stakes when Hannon and Hughes were also part of the winning combination.

Hannon said: "You are never confident but this horse travels well - I thought we were definitely going to be nailed in the last furlong but he has picked up and gone again. I think that he will probably be a better horse when he goes another furlong.

"You have to wait for the mile nurseries but I’ll have a word with Her Majesty and John Warren and see how they feel.

"We had a very good Ascot but then Quadrille got beaten. He was in front before the line and in front after the line and the camera followed him afterwards, so we all thought the we had a winner for the Queen at Ascot. But it’s always lovely to have a winner for Her Majesty.

"Sometimes Hughsie can give you a terrible time with the things that he does but he is good, isn’t he? He’s a very good jockey.

"I thought that it was a bit daunting for Libranno out there in front all of the way, especially in the middle of the track and with the crowd. I thought he was very workmanlike and did a very good job.

"We’ll think about the Prix Morny for him and we will see how we go - I’ll have a look and see what sort of entries we have got."

BLUE SQUARE PAYS OUT

Blue Square paid out on Richard Hughes taking the Racing UK Leading Jockey Award at Glorious Goodwood after the rider’s seventh victory of the week on the Queen’s Royal Exchange in the RSA Nursery.

He is one behind the number of winners achieved at Glorious Goodwood by Johnny Murtagh in 2008, Kieren Fallon in 1998 and Lester Piggott in 1982.

Hughes started the week a well-backed 7/4 second favourite.

FROM COCKNEY REBEL TO DIAMOND GEEZAH

Racehorse owner Phil Cunningham will almost certainly never buy another horse as good as dual Guineas winner Cockney Rebel, but he is having fun with some lesser lights.

One of them is Diamond Geezah, who is trained by Barry Hills and runs for a syndicate compiled by Cunningham called Rebel Racing, and who today finished runner-up behind Royal Exchange in the RSA Nursery.

Cunningham said: "He’s a lovely horse who has been on the go since the Brocklesby Stakes [March 27]. The ground is probably a little too fast for him today, but we made the entry and decided to come for a trip to the races - he’s run a cracker.

"I’m not sure where we’ll run next - we’ve been having a deliberation about dropping him back to six furlongs at Doncaster, but Barry’s the boss and we’ll leave it to him.

"We bought two yearlings last year to run for Rebel Racing, and the other is Barney Rebel, who ran a cracker here in a maiden on Tuesday when fifth on his first start. To see them both at Glorious Goodwood and running well has been great."

Cunningham has 11 horses in training, including some in syndicates. They are trained by Hills, Stan Moore and France-based expatriate Eoghan O’Neill. He also has some yearlings by Cockney Rebel, whose first progeny will appear at the track next year.

The third home in today’s race was Singapore Lilly, who suffered interference on the home turn, but stayed on to take place money under Japanese jockey Hiroki Goto

Trainer Mick Channon said: "She ran alright, but the handicapper has put her up 11lb so we had to run today. We’re running out of options. Hiroki is one of the best jockeys in Japan and he did nothing wrong today - it certainly wasn’t his fault the filly was beaten."

Sixth Race winner’s quotes

Oak Tree Stakes

WINKWORTH & PEARSON IN GLORIOUS PARADISE

Sussex-based racing fans were rewarded with another local winner when Tropical Paradise, trained at Chiddingfold by Peter Winkworth, landed the Group Three Oak Tree Stakes.

She became a first Glorious Goodwood winner for her trainer, and also for jockey Ian Mongan, although he was later found guilty of careless riding after his filly was adjudged to have interfered with Strictly Dancing, who finished last. Mongan’s ban takes place on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 August.

The 16/1 winner had gained some minor black type when placed in a Listed race on her previous outing, but today’s success embellished her CV in style in a higher-grade event.

Assistant trainer Anton Pearson said: "I didn’t think we’d beat Henry Cecil’s horse [Jacqueline Quest who was unplaced] especially as our filly likes softer ground, but I couldn’t believe her price because she’s very good.

"She has now earned her place in the paddocks [as a broodmare] which pleases me no end.

"We came here yesterday and looked at the ground, and it’s quicker today, so I was worried, but it wasn’t the strongest Group Three in the world. When she was third in the Listed race at Pontefract she hung on the ground, but it was a different story today.

"She’s won here before and Goodwood experience holds them in good stead, and Ian Mongan knows her well - he is the only jockey to have won on her twice and gave her a great ride. We all know how good he is.

"I’ll talk to the owners about plans, but she’s definitely going to improve on softer ground and she’ll get further."

NO GOLDEN DOUBLE FOR HER MAJESTY

Golden Stream was unable to give the Queen a quick-fire double following Royal Exchange’s victory as the Sir Michael Stoute-trained filly came home three-quarters of a length second to Tropical Paradise in the Group Three Oak Tree Stakes.

The Sadler’s Wells four-year-old, sent off at 9/2, raced towards the rear of the nine-runner field and ran on strongly under Ryan Moore in the closing stages of the seven-furlong contest to overhaul third-placed Pyrrha but could not reach the winner.

John Warren, racing manager to The Queen, said: "She ran a very nice race and ran right up to form with Chris Wall’s filly (Pyrrha). She just found one better on the day.

"She didn’t handle the track very well at all and didn’t quite come down the hill. Ryan said it took her a little while to get herself organised in the straight. There will be more improvement on a flatter track.

"We will not step her back up to a mile. It may have looked like she was staying on but that was more to do with the fact that she got herself organised in the closing stages after not handling the course.

"We have tried her so many times at a mile and she just doesn’t stay, so we will keep her to seven furlongs and find a flatter track."

Seventh race win quotes -

Turf Club Handicap

BLOOMING PERFECT FOR TEAM RYAN

Perfect Blossom has bloomed from a low-grade maiden into a smart winning machine since joining Kevin Ryan’s yard this season and the filly made it six wins from seven starts for the trainer with a trail-blazing victory in the five-furlong Turf Club Handicap.

Trainer’s daughter Amy Ryan drove the three-year-old to a length and three quarters success over runner-up Confessional. The success was the 5lb claimer’s first at Goodwood.

The delighted apprentice exclaimed: "First ride and first winner - what more could I ask? The big meetings are the important ones and I got a real buzz from that.

"She’s just improving with each run and hopefully there’s still more improvement to come. I rode her at Epsom last time and she just hung a little bit on the camber and pricked her ears in front but today she got her head down and got on with it."

Perfect Blossom, who only made her seasonal return on June 2, when victorious under Paul Hanagan, carried a 6lb penalty for her most recent success at Epsom and was sent off a 15/2 chance.

Speaking of her front-running triumph, the winning trainer said: "This filly doesn’t have to make the running and it would be nice for her to get a tow from something. She’s a good filly and she’s getting stronger. She has done great this year but actually I’m really looking forward to next year.

"We might go to York next for a five-furlong race there. We’ll stick at the trip for now, it’s not broken so why fix it, we’ll stick with what’s working.

"She has an unbelievable temperament and is taking her racing so well. She stepped into a much tougher race today and has been more impressive than ever.

"It’s great that Amy rode her today and thanks to Bill and Ann Morris (owners) for letting her keep the ride. Also, a big thank you to Paul Hanagan - he set the ball rolling and he will be back on her again."

ALL SET TO END ON A TRIUMPHANT NOTE

After five fab days on the Sussex Downs the team at Glorious Goodwood are ready for a fitting climax to one of racing’s great events.

"We’re aiming to go out on a good note," said clerk of the course Seamus Buckley at the conclusion of racing on day four, and with the Group One Blue Square Nassau Stakes and Bluesq.com Stewards’ Cup as highlights tomorrow, Goodwood is about to serve up a wonderful finale.

Preparations for tomorrow have already begun, and Buckley said: "There is the possibility of some passing showers overnight and into tomorrow morning, but we’re going to water the top bend to ensure some nice ground for the fillies who take part in the Blue Square Nassau Stakes, and we are also taking the rail down in the same area to provide fresh turf.

"We’re going to put ten to 12 millimetres of water on the track from the mile and two furlongs start to the home turn, but we’ve decided to leave the straight alone.

"We’ve had a great week, with more highly-entertaining racing today, and we’re looking forward to ending in style."
