History of Membership
Being a sporting member at Goodwood is a tradition which stretches back hundreds of years. The first Duke of Richmond was a keen huntsman and bought Goodwood House as a base for when he attended the nearby Charlton Hunt. Many of his London friends also joined this hunt, for the sporting and social enjoyment as well as the chance to be associated with one of the country’s leading hunts at that time.
Once horseracing had been firmly established up on the Sussex Downs, the 2nd Duke of Richmond attracted a large number of fans of the sport of kings who travelled from across the country to attend Goodwood’s early race meetings. Soon royalty from across Europe also came.
Good as Golf
When James Braid laid out Goodwood’s championship golf course in 1914, the Goodwood golf club rapidly became popular and when Goodwood’s motor racing circuit was opened by the 9th Duke in 1948 it also drew a crowd of motorsport fans as well as people keen to enjoy the glamour and excitement of the great fixtures held at Goodwood up until 1966. Today, the Goodwood Road Racing Club gives its members many benefits, including exclusive members’ areas and many European trips driving through spectacular scenery with new friends as passionate about cars as you are.
Finally Goodwood’s health club is everything you would expect from a twenty first century spa. It features a superb swimming pool, Jacuzzi, beauty treatments, massages, steam rooms, and gymnasium with its state of the art equipment. This together with its relaxing bar and grill makes it the perfect place to both unwind and meet friends.
