Goodwood Revival
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Goodwood Revival?
The Goodwood Revival is the world’s largest historic motor race meeting, which relives the glory days of historic Goodwood Motor Circuit.  But the Revival is far more than a series of races for historic cars – it is a magical step back in time, a chance to get away from the modern world and revel in the romance of motor racing as it used to be.  The lovingly restored circuit is unchanged from its heyday (1948-1966) and great lengths are taken to ensure that everything on-site is exactly as it was – from the fashions to the flying machines; from the cars to the catering.  This is motor racing at its most theatrical, with competitors and enthusiasts dressed in 1950s period costume for a weekend of excitement and nostalgia.

Paddock

Air Displays –magnificent World War II aircraft such as the Spitfire, Hurricane and Mustang perform their aerobatic displays throughout the weekend in the skies above this former Battle of Britain airfield.  However, don’t miss the Freddie March ‘Spirit of Aviation’, a prestigious ‘concours d’elegance’ for historic aircraft built up to 1966, that brings together around 25 of the world’s finest, most elegant, original and rarely-seen aeroplanes from the evocative pioneering days of aviation.

Air Displays

Tractor Rides – get away from the hullabaloo around the paddock and enjoy magnificent views of the racing action from the spectator banks.  Period tractors towing passenger trailers take you around the circuit perimeter to visit the far-flung corners of this picturesque track, where old-fashioned threshing machines harvest the corn stooks on the infield while the cars speed by.

How do I find my way around?
Finger signposts direct you to all the major areas of the event, and there are numerous ‘You Are Here’ boards showing locations of paddocks, food, toilets, exhibitions, first aid and viewing areas.  Alternatively, buy a programme, which contains a detailed map of the event.  To view the circuit from a different perspective, take a tractor ride around the circuit.

Where can I eat?
An extensive variety of public catering is available all day around the perimeter and inside the circuit, ranging from quality fast food, fish and chips, and even a NAAFI Wagon. There is something to suit all tastes and appetites including champagne, seafood, traditional bars and vegetarian food.  The Hurricane Café on the Woodcote Lawn, the Lancaster Café at Fordwater and the Greens Restaurant on Richmond Lawn all offer high quality fare. View the aeroplanes and stop off for a bite to eat at the Spitfire Café, based on the Aero Club Lawn.  Sup a traditional pint of Gales Real Ale at the Oily Rag pub or in one of our bespoke 1960s Revival Bars – to be found on the Woodcote Lawn, Lavant Straight, Lavant Corner and Madgwick Corner.  Be sure to visit Goodwood’s own organic food concessions.

Hints & Tips

Ten Top Tips to get the most from the Goodwood Revival

1

Make sure you book your tickets in advance as it is no longer possible to buy ‘on the day’.

2

While booking advance tickets, ask for a pass to get your classic car into the special Revival Car Show area for pre-1966 vehicles. Arriving at the circuit in an authentic car from the period adds a special touch to an already inspiring weekend.

3

Hotels and B&Bs in the immediate vicinity tend to get booked up quickly by competitors and regular visitors. Ease your phone bill (and your patience!) by calling hotels that are a short drive (20 minutes or so) from Goodwood. These are just as convenient, and are more likely to have accommodation, especially at shorter notice. Alternatively visit www.visitsussex.org which we hope will take a lot of the legwork out of finding yourself a place to lay your head after a long day at Goodwood.
We have a dedicated page for Event Accomodation, click here to view.

4

Save money by buying a ticket for the entire weekend. Friday offers a full day of the cars practising and is least crowded. Saturday features a full programme of exceptional racing action and Sunday continues with a full day of breathtaking historic car and motorcycle racing. All three days also feature special demonstrations and air displays.

5

Plan to arrive early in the morning to beat some of the traffic. The first cars hit the track at approximately 10:00hrs each day, so even the early bird has plenty to see.

6

Why not enter into the Revival spirit by wearing 1950s/1960s clothing? All competitors and officials will be authentically attired, as will the majority of the viewing public – click here for Getting the Look. Do make sure, though, that your clothing is warm and that you have a waterproof overcoat. The circuit is a former airfield, you know!

7

Do take advantage of the tractor/trailer combinations that take spectators to and from the circuit's further reaches, where some of the best viewing is to be found. It's quite an adventure!

8

Do seek out some of the delicious food available around the site, most of it prepared to traditional 1950s recipes.

9

Buy a programme – it’s the best way to identify the star cars and drivers – and tune your radio to the Goodwood frequency 87.7FM, which gives all the latest news over the weekend.

10 A lightweight set of binoculars will allow you to enjoy the racing to the full. For the optimum view, you might consider buying a grandstand seat ticket.
Did you Know?

The Goodwood Revival is the only sporting event in the world to be set entirely to an authentic period theme. Here are a few fascinating facts you might not know about the Revival:

In 2007 the Goodwood Revival enjoyed its most successful meeting to date, attracting more than 116,000 visitors over the three days.

The Revival is supported by 28 sponsors and associate sponsors, including 5 automotive manufacturers, plus some of the biggest names in finance, luxury brands and technology

312 journalists and 229 photographers from 175 publications reported on the 2007 Revival.

Programmes and news items from eleven radio stations were broadcast before, during and after the 2007 Revival.

Press features on the Revival were reported in 25 different countries from 116 newspapers and magazines.

425 historic racing cars and 30 racing motorcycles took part in the 2007 Revival as well as 20 period caravans and 30 period aircraft.

The operations within the circuit were tended by more than 200 pre-1966 service vehicles, from delivery vans, Jeeps and lorries to ambulances, ice cream vans, course cars and chauffeur-driven taxis.

In 2007, a fleet of historic tractors trundled more than 1350 miles around the circuit's perimeter road, towing floats of spectators to the best viewing areas.

49,000 private cars parked at 2007 Revival - if they were lined up nose to tail, the ensuing traffic jam would stretch for approximately 135 miles.

£12million of Spitfires, Hurricanes and other historic aircraft spend the Revival battling it out in mock dog-fights in the skies above Goodwood's circuit.

Only native or traditional plant species i.e. silver birch, hydrangeas, box hedging, cherry laurel etc., are grown to create the authentic period feeling

The nearby Weald and Downland Museum specially developed an obsolete variety of extra-tall corn in order to produce the traditional stooks that decorate the circuit infield; during the Revival, a steam thresher processes the crop.

At the 2007 Revival, 2500 catering staff served 17,500 bacon rolls, 59,000 hot drinks, 33,000 pints of beer, 1300 cases of wine and 4900 bottles of champagne, kept cool by 4 tonnes of ice.
