1966 retro store returns

Tesco vintage store makes welcome return to Goodwood Revival

Remember the big old boxes of Daz and the rows of Campbell’s tomato soup? Remember the Green Shield Stamps and the spectacular glamour of the check-out assistants? Return to the 1960s shopping experience at Goodwood again this year, as you step across the aisles and back in time at Tesco’s 1966 replica store.

Opening hours

The doors of the 1,700sqft supermarket swing open on the morning of the 16th of September, so pop along to feast your eyes on some of your favourite products from the era, complete with retro packaging, and experience Tesco retailing 1960s-style. We will have over 100 retro products on the shelves, with favorites such as Salt n Shake crisps, Treats, Marathon, Opal Fruits and many more. Also we have an old fashioned ice cream counter providing the famous ’99 ice cream, complete with a flake!

For the second year running, Tesco Bank will sponsor the biggest and best historic motor racing party of the year – Goodwood Revival.

Andrew Higginson, Tesco Bank Chairman, is delighted that Tesco is involved: “It’s a real privilege to be sponsoring the Goodwood Revival again this year. Motor racing is a great passion of mine, and I’m proud of the association between the Tesco brand – a muchloved British institution since the 1920s – and this fantastic British racing event. Our 1960s-style store was very popular with visitors last year, and we are delighted to announce that this year we will be making it even better, with over 100 retro products on the shelves.”

Tesco is the UK’s largest retailer and one of the world’s leading international retailers. Tesco has around 5,000 stores worldwide, employing 472,000 people in the 14 countries in which it operates. Our core purpose is to create value for customers to earn their lifetime loyalty. Our success depends on people: the people who shop with us and the people who work with us.

Designing the store

Greg Bullen, Tesco store designer, designed the store with the original Tesco philosophy in mind. Jack Cohen’s ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ approach gives the store an authentic 1960s feel. As Greg explains: “We poured over archive material, analysing the look and feel of 1960s stores before designing this unique retro store. At the same time, we had Goodwood’s chic image in mind. The colour scheme is reminiscent of Gulf Racing Team, with powder blue wall tiles and marigold orange Green Shield Stamp signage.”

Check-out the staff

The staff manning the store will also look the part. Tesco consulted old photographs to ensure the uniforms had the right look, but through working with their current uniform suppliers ensured the clothes were much more comfortable than those manufactured 45 years ago. In order to be as authentic as possible, special attention was paid to details such as cuffs and collars. Like last year, staff will be supplied with a box of goodies of make-up and hair styling products, including false lashes. They all did a fantastic job of doing their hair and make up in the style of the era, and this year won’t disappoint!
