The opening installment of the hugely popular Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy two-parter fell to the Team Belstaff Norton Manx duo, Duncan Fitchett and Jeremy McWilliams. However, it was far from a done deal for much of the running.
Actor and motorcyclist Ewan McGregor led the field around on the warm up lap, with Steve ‘Baywatch’ Brogan in front following the traditional Le Mans sprint start. Brogan and McWilliams traded places until pitting together at half-distance of the 25-minute race. Brogan swapped with Ian Bain, their Norton International emerging trackside in the lead but Fitchett wasn’t to be denied. He swept into the lead on the penultimate lap to take the flag.
Sadly the expected threats from stars Wayne Gardner and Cameron Donald failed to materialise following ’bike trouble.
