The opening day of the 2011 Goodwood Revival has drawn to a close. Tomorrow’s packed race card kicks off with the Goodwood Trophy at 10am, a 20-minute race for Grand Prix and Voiturette cars campaigned between 1930 and 1950. ERA man Paddins Dowling was fastest in qualifying. The St Mary’s Trophy race for saloon cars is always a favourite with Revival visitors and evergreen septuagenarian Barrie’Whizzo’ Williams was fastest in Friday qualifying aboard Michael Steele’s rumbling Ford Galaxie 500, ahead of former BTCC star Paul Radisich’s similar car. Jackie Oliver was third quickest ahead of fellow Le Mans star, Tom Kristensen.
Other big names to feature today include former Grand Prix ace Gerhard Berger who was quickest in qualifying for the Fordwater Trophy race for Jaguar E-types in the ‘Lightweight’ variation he is sharing with Red Bull designer, Adrian Newey. In second place was the similar car of Emanuele Pirro/Desiré Wilson. With a stellar line-up of stars for this one-off celebration of the E’s half-century, this 45-minute min-enduro is bound to be a stormer.
