Andy Middlehurst added further honours to his impressive tally with a repeat win in the Glover Trophy for 1.5-litre Grand Prix cars. The former works Nissan touring car driver qualified his Lotus 25 on the front row, but was beaten off the line by Nick Fennell’s similar car as Mark Piercy kept a watching brief in third aboard his Lola Mk4.
Veteran all-rounder Middlehurst repeatedly pulled out of Fennell’s slipstream on the Lavant Straight but was unable to make it stick. However, ten minutes into the 25 minute race, Middlehurst got past at Fordwater and proceeded to pull away. Piercy and Fennell then slugged it out until the former lost out in traffic. The positions remained static thereafter with Middlehurst leading home Fennell by 12 seconds with Piercy a further eight seconds behind in third.
Middlehurst said later: “That was a brilliant race and it was nice and sunny unlike last year. Nick raced hard so I just went for it. Nick drives really well, so it was a good win; a one-two finish for Classic Team Lotus, too.”
