Goodwood Trophy race
Hulbert claims honours in thrilling race
The second day of the 2011 Goodwood Revival got off to a flier as Mac Hulbert claimed honours in a thrilling Goodwood Trophy race. The ERA pilot headed home Julian Mahzub’s Alfa Romeo 308C by barely a car’s length for a grandstand finish in a race where the order changed from corner to corner all the way down the order.
US-based Irishman Paddins Dowling led initially from pole aboard his ERA B-type but his time at the front proved short-lived as Hulbert jumped him half-way around the opening lap. He in turn lost out to Mahzub into the chicane on the third tour. Man on the move at this point was Duncan Ricketts aboard his ERA E-type. A supercharger drive had worked loose in qualifying but he overcame his third row starting spot to move up into the final podium position before spinning off dramatically at Madgwick at quarter-distance.
Dowling, meanwhile, fell down the order with car trouble, Mahzub and Hulbert slugging it out on a sodden track as former DTM driver Frank Stippler moved up to third aboard Willi Balz’s Maserati 8CM. The latter couldn’t quite keep pace in his pursuit, but his balletic car control proved a huge hit with the crowd.
