The Anglo-New Zealand Lotus 15 pairing of Joel Twyman and Roger Wills won the 45-minute Madgwick Cup race for small-bore sports-racing cars made from 1955-60. Twyman led into Madgwick for the first time only for Graeme Dodd to use the superior power of his Cooper ‘Monaco’ to jump him into Lavant as Rob Hall kept a watching brief aboard his Lola Mk1. The former Formula Vauxhall star demoted Twyman down to third into St Mary’s on the second lap and set after Dodd, the duo changing places several times per lap during the first ten laps. The Cooper had the better pace, the Lola proving more effective under braking as the ever-brave Hall steered it on the bump stops. Unfortunately, Dodd retired his car on the following tour before he was able to hand it over to Simon Hadfield at the start of the pit stop window.
After twenty minutes, Wills assumed the lead on changing over from Twyman with Martin Stretton having claimed second place aboard Mark Clubb’s Cooper, albeit some 14-seconds down on the leader as the Hall car dropped out. With ten minutes left to go, the gap between Wills and Stretton had grown to 20-seconds as the unpainted Lotus 15 of brothers Jamie and Ewan McIntyre made inroads in third place at around a second a lap. Jamie McIntyre took Stretton into Fordwater with seven minutes left to run, the positions remaining static to the flag. Wills crossed the line some 41-seconds ahead of his nearest pursuer.
A delighted Twyman said later: “I had a good getaway but Graeme was dropping lots of oil and then Rob dropped out which was lucky for us. It was fantastic, though, and a great result.”
