SUMMING UP GLORIOUS GOODWOOD 2010

FABRICIUS REFLECTS ON A SUCCESSFUL GLORIOUS GOODWOOD 2010

Goodwood Racecourse managing director Rod Fabricius, overseeing his final Glorious Goodwood after 28 years at the helm, hailed a fantastic five days of sport and paid tribute to those who have made this year’s festival a memorable success.

Speaking after Elliptical had taken the week’s concluding race for trainer Gerard Butler, Fabricius reflected on the week’s prominent triumphs that included Canford Cliffs in the Group One Sussex Stakes, Midday’s victory in the Group OBlue Square Nassau Stakes and Evens And Odds in the bluesq.com Stewards’ Cup.

He said: "The week has been made by the remarkable success of Hannon and Hughes.

"Midday’s win today was wonderful for Henry (Cecil). He has enjoyed numerous successes at this festival meeting and it is great to see him in the winner’s enclosure again.

"Dandy Nicholls of course has always regarded Goodwood as a rich harvest and he has come good this week, so all in all it seems to be horses for courses.

"We have had good weather, top-class racing, some great riding performances and, in all honesty, the meeting has been set up by the remarkable achievement of the groundstaff and Seamus Buckley. They have succeeded in delivering the ideal racing surface in what has been a very challenging summer due to the lack of rain."

‘I’M THE LUCKIEST MAN’ SAYS RECORD-BREAKER HUGHES

Jockey Richard Hughes was the toast of racing today after setting a new record for winners at a single Glorious Goodwood.

His victory on Eucharist in the Play Poker At gcasino.com Nursery was his ninth of the week, and all were achieved on horses trained by Wiltshire’s Richard Hannon who also set a record at the meeting. The trainer’s score easily surpassed the six winners achieved by Sir Michael Stoute in 1989.

When told he had beaten the previous best shared by Lester Piggott, Kieren Fallon and Johnny Murtagh, Hughes, who romped to victory in Glorious Goodwood’s Racing UK Leading Jockey Award, said: "I’m very proud to be mentioned in the same breath as those guys, but I couldn’t do it without Richard Hannon. I’m the luckiest man alive!

"It’s been a fabulous week and things have just gone from strength to strength. There was a lot of pressure on me before the Canford Cliffs ride [they won Wednesday’s Sussex Stakes], but after that I’d done my job and could enjoy the rest of Goodwood. When you are enjoying your rides, there’s nothing better.

"All my life I’ve been working to get good rides and now I’m getting them - and I’m not mucking up! A lot of people used to slag me [for his hold-up style of riding], but I maintained it was because I wasn’t on the best horse. I used to sneak them into contention, and then they’d find nothing and people used to say I’d left it too late.

"Now I’m on horses that can actually do it, and it’s the best feeling in the world. Someone said it’s been the Richard Hughes week - I like the sound of that."

Hughes was completing a 16/1 double on the day having earlier won the Mobile Betting At ipone.bluesq.com EBF Maiden on Pausanias. For claiming the Racing UK title he receives a life-time subscription to the satellite channel, a £1,000 donation to Racing Welfare, the same sum for a charity of his choice and a deluxe Goodwood hamper.

Paying tribute to Hughes, Hannon, who is the rider’s father-in-law said: "He’s different gear isn’t he? He gets them balanced and they run for him. Of course, I have the best retainer because he’s married to my daughter.

"We might have a drink in the pub on the way home, but we’ve got a job of work at Newbury tomorrow."
