Goodwood to Host Southern PGA Championship

The best professionals in southern England will converge on prestigious Goodwood for the crucial end-of-season C&K Group Southern PGA Championship from October 17th-19th 2011.

The leading 80 players from the South Region Order of Merit will be eligible to compete in the brand new 54-hole event over the Downs Course that is now ranked in Golf World magazine’s Top 100 English Courses and was the venue for the highly successful 2010 English PGA Championship.

Some of the most celebrated figure in competitive golf will have the chance to chase the title and include former European Masters Champion Jamie Spence as well as Portuguese Open winner Michael McLean and former Trinidad and Tobago Open champion Gary Stubbington.

However considerable attention will focus on Richard Wallis from Walmer and Kingsdown who has led the Order of Merit for most of the season and secured six out right victories to open up a impressive gap on his nearest rivals. He is confidently predicted to be ready to take the next significant step in his career and qualify for a place on the European Tour and join the ranks of the globe-trotting superstars.

The Downs Course

The 7,104-yards Downs Course was originally designed by five times Open Champion James Braid and has kept pace with modern developments through the years so that it maintains an effective and formidable challenge for the most up-to-date skills and equipment.

The intriguing aspect of the C&K Group-sponsored event is that the preceding pro-am contest on Monday 17th October offers the chance for any amateur golfer to form a team to play alongside the professionals and gain valuable experience from their technique and know-how. The Pro-Am includes breakfast, 18 holes (shotgun start at 11am) range balls and a three course celebratory dinner in the magnificent Goodwood House followed by Prize Giving.

Eddie Bullock, currently Captain of the Professional Golfers Association says: “Golf At Goodwood is pioneering the way for anyone to enjoy top class golf at affordable prices and this new event will underline our commitment to that philosophy”.
